Welcome to the NABBA chairman’s column. 2008 was a year in which we lost a number of NABBA stalwarts, people who have supported NABBA for many years. The youngest being Elaine Thorpe, a person I knew very well as a competitor in the Northern England area of which I was rep for. Elaine was a person who you could talk to and have a laugh with. She will be greatly missed at the North Britain, Britain and Universe contests. Bill Norris was a person not many of today’s body builders will have heard of. Bill was one of the founder members of NABBA. In 1984 at the tender age of 70, Bill broke the record in the squat in the 60 and 70-year-old class with a lift of 347.5 lbs, a weight very few will ever repeat. I have known Bill for many years meeting at NABBA contests, at my first NABBA council meeting, I was very nervous, everyone just talking to each other and me feeling like an intruder. Bill came over and shook my hand and said, “Here, sit next to me”. A true gentleman in every way. Bill also raised many thousands of pounds for NABBA, which we will be forever grateful for. Reg Park, what can one say about Reg. I have met Reg many times. My first meeting a friend told me of a bodybuilding contest at Hebburn power club and Reg was to be guest star. We arrived at the venue only to be told there were no tickets available. We were standing in the foyer when in came this person just like a Greek God with his beautiful wife, Reg came over, shook our hands, introduced his wife and asked if we had come to see him pose, we answered in the infermitive, but also said there were no tickets available. He told us to wait where we were; he came back with the show organiser and gave us two free tickets. Memories like this are never forgotten and makes bodybuilding worthwhile, thanks Reg. More memories next time. |
